Instructions for Use of the Listening Materials

As you peruse the content of this course web site, please note that listening examples are identified as follows:

Throughout this site, musical examples are found by locating the "Listen" icon (see below).

A listening example

When you see one of these images, simply click on it and a small window will pop up containing a player and song list. You can move this player window to one side of your computer screen as you continue to read the content on the page, accessing the musical examples as needed to supplement your understanding.

Once that window appears, simply click on any of the song titles to initiate playback. You can then use the familiar controls to rewind, pause, fast forward, or change the loudness of the music. You can also click anywhere along the scroll bar representing the duration of the song to begin playback at that point. In the upper right corner there is a readout displaying the current location of playback in minutes and seconds (mm:ss). Get familiar with this interface ... you will be using it a LOT as you explore the content of this web site.

Instructions for Playing Videos

When you see the Laptop Icon (video of Elvis performing "Hound Dog" on Milton Berle), just click on it to playback video ... a new browser window will open and the video will begin playing immediately. Go ahead ... try it now. Just click the Laptop Icon and watch the video open in a new window and initiate playback. [NOTE: If this does not work, make sure your browser is set to allow pop-up windows for this site.]

You can pause, play, or stop the video, by using the familiar controls at the bottom of hte video playback window. You can also drag the location pointer to a new location in the video to start playback from that location. You can also adjust the loudness of the audio for the video example by moving the slider to the right of the speaker icon in the lower right corner of the video playback window.

Playing Interactive Multimedia

In order to facilitate your progression through the course and the development/enhancement of listening skills, I have created numerous interactive multimedia examples. Whenever you see the small Flash icon (click to play movie), click on that graphic to open a window that will reveal an interactive listening guide for a song representing one of several musical forms we will be discussing this semester. Go ahead, click on the icon now to see how it works. When the window opens, just use the play, pause, or rewind buttons to navigate through the song ... you can also drag the button on the scroll bar to relocate to a different place in the music. Finally, the chord symbols in most examples are interactive, so you can click on them to initiate playback at that point in the song.
